How long a commute would you drive?

How long would you drive as your commute? In my 20s I had a 40-45 minute drive each way and I remember it being a bit of a killer at times. I'm now late 40s and considering going for a job that is about an hour's drive each way.

It used to take me 45-60mins but it was a job I loved. I quite enjoyed the morning commute listening to the radio, I used to make calls to sort any insurance, admin stuff, etc out on the way too.

I missed it when I moved nearer.

Personally I never cast my net further than one of the next towns in either direction, so a 15-30 minutes drive, depending on traffic. I've also worked in a couple of different villages less than 10 minutes away in either direction.

I'm not a fan of my current commute as it is, as it's often nearer to 30 minutes with us crawling bumper to bumper all the way down the duel carriageway. So it wouldn't be for me at all, but everyone is different. I have some colleagues who commute for an hour and enjoy listening to podcasts etc as their downtime on the way home. Personally I'd rather not spend 2 hours or more of my day driving, often stuck in traffic, but each to their own.

I have worked in 3 schools - all no more than 20 minutes from home on local roads (I.e. no motorway driving).

It sometimes takes me a bit longer to get home if traffic is busy but not often.

30 minutes would be my absolute maximum. Any more than that would be too much on top of already very busy days.

I think I feel the same ☹️. I’ll see how I feel at interview.

I think you need to think about winter, driving back in the dark etc. It’s also two hours that you can’t be planning, marking etc.
Parents evenings, afterschool or even weekend events would be a very long day with that commute.

My hope is to move to that city but there's just nothing coming up I can afford. Wondering if I can do it for (an indefinite) short term.

My current commute is 35 mins and involves a motorway.

I have driven up to 1hr 20 in the past - but I’d never do that now.

I am starting a new job in September working for the academy trust - the main office is an hour from where I live and schools are within an hours drive - so my commute will increase but I’ll be getting a company car.

First school 15 mins on a main country road which was great.
Second school 5 mins, but lots of kids lived on the same road as me and no time to decompress.
Current school 45-55 mins, mostly main country roads which is pleasant but still long especially after parents evening etc.
New school 30 mins, mostly main country roads, should be a nice middle ground!

Road works starts on my route last year. It took my already 40 mins to over 1 hour. Its a killer and if i can get a better job closer then I will go for it

CeciliaMars · 13/06/2026 08:12

Unless I was desperate for a job, no more than 30 mins. It's a long, hard enough job as it is!

I had a terrible day yesterday at work and have applied.

You won't believe this. I used to drive 60 miles each way!!

Context. I worked for a college group. The furthest college was 60 miles away from where I lived. One class was so vile that 3 teachers had refused to teach them. I was begged to step in and take over the class. I lasted a term. One day a week. I was paid travel costs. However, I got strange looks when I complained about the travel. I was told it wasn't a bad journey. It was mainly motorway. I think it took 60-90 minutes.

After a particularly bad incident, my head of department decided that her staff would no longer being teaching that particular group and their head of department could go and deal with it all himself.

I used to commute about an hour in the car but with road works/accidents/bad traffic that could go up to 1h30. It was a killer and the main reason I left after many years (thankfully part time).

I now work 30 mins max drive away (but did take a pay cut). It has been life changing for me and I'm not exaggerating!
