Hi there, everyone

I hope you've all enjoyed your half-term! I start a new role as an HLTA in a primary school on Monday, and I am wondering what to expect on my first day and first weeks, what essentials I should have, etc.? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there, everyone

I hope you've all enjoyed your half-term! I start a new role as an HLTA in a primary school on Monday, and I am wondering what to expect on my first day and first weeks, what essentials I should have, etc.? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Is it a small school or large school? I was a teacher at small village primary school, and I worked with a fantastic TA who trained to become a HLTA in the same school. From my point of view, whilst being pleased for her, I was sad as I lost her from my classroom, as she became PPA cover across the school. She ended up covering a different class every morning, teaching the classes, whilst doing intervention groups in the afternoon.

A HLTA is generally used as a cover supervisor, teaching whole classes when the teacher isn't there. Thatnis not to say that you would do the same, but my experience has been that HLTA's are used instead of paying expensive supply teacher bills.

So I would have some resources ready (pens, pencils, whiteboard pens etc) and maybe some tricks up your sleeve like games you can play with the class, if you finish early etc. Be strict and firm as you will be teaching the whole class. Use then class teacher to help you to develop authority.

The school building is large not seen a primary like it. However, I know your question was about pupil size. There are only around 280-90 pupils less than 300. The JD was quite heavy on class cover and PPA, so that would be exciting only because I do plan to start my PGCE soon. I think for me, my main concern is the curriculum and subject knowledge, which I did list to them. Thank you for your response. I really appreciate it. x

I am secondary but we do have primary schools in our trust - HLTAs are essentially used as Cover Supervisors instead of bringing in supply teachers and blowing budgets - which from what you’ve said - the advert seems to indicate this.

i would expect that the first few weeks will be working with the TA team and also spending time with each class teacher etc and then possibly covering some teachers here and there.

Towards the end of term, transition periods happen - you may find that you’ll be supporting where teachers who are leaving are going off to their new schools for a couple of days and their class will need cover…

I wouldn’t worry about subject knowledge as such - this will come in time. If you are covering teachers then the work should already be set. You will pick knowledge up and also if you are unsure of anything - Chat GPT is your friend.
