New role in the MAT

Hi all,

I’ve been a Headteacher since 2007 and I’m currently on my second school - I was appointed into the role in September 2024 and I committed two years before wanting to step away - initially to retire. I’m coming up to 62.

I told the CEO that I’ll be stepping away from my HT role with effect from the 31/08/2026 where I had planned to retire completely. The new Headteacher has been appointed and the handover process begins in May.

I had a meeting with the CEO today and they’ve offered me a part time role within the MAT working 4 days a week as MAT Support Leader. The role is to work closely with the CEO and Headteachers in developing the MAT. I’ll essentially spend most of my time out visiting schools and supporting HTs and SLT.

Has anyone else known of this role?

Sounds like a good one, have heard of similar, if 4 days is too much say you will do 3. It appears they value your expertise, could be interesting and fulfilling.

Agreed - if it gives you enough flexibility, it would be a really good way of continuing to use your expertise to benefit even more pupils and teachers. It could also be a good way to start to transition to retirement rather than having a hard stop and going from 100 miles per hour to nothing!

The MAT where I'm a Chair of Governors has a Director of Education whose role sounds very similar.

Sounds like a School Improvement Partner under another name. A very widespread practice.

Ours has someone who does this role under a different title. He seems to spend 90% of his time doing interviews a across the trust.

Hi all - thank you for your responses.
I have agreed to accept the role - but I’ll be taking an extended break and starting my new role on the 1st October 2026. I do have a two week holiday booked for the first half of September and then have some time at home when I’m back.

I will be doing this role 4 days a week - and I’ll mainly be supporting new Headteachers to start with - mentoring them as we do have a couple within the trust - I’ll also be leading on the development of new strategies and framework. An exciting role for sure.
