Internal candidate for an externally advertised TLR?

I feel like I should already know this, but if a TLR holder leaves is there a process by which internal candidates would be able to apply for the TLR post if it has been advertised externally? Would the internal just apply in the same way an external would and then school would readvertise for a 'teacher of' post to replace the promoted internal candidate if successful?

You would need to have a conversation with your line manager first before applying.

and yes - they would appoint a standard teacher if they promoted someone internally as there would still be a vacancy.

Thanks- the head has encouraged me to apply. My HoD perhaps not so enthusiastic as is relatively new and I think has someone external in mind for it, but that's a different story.

Current head and HoD for my references, even though they'll be interviewing?

Surely whether they advertise to replace the “teacher of” post would depend on the nature of the TLR post, how much time it is expected to take up, and the staffing levels in the subject concerned

My daughter has a TLR as a head of year. When she got it, the school didn’t advertise her old job. She kept her “teacher of” job but things were adjusted a bit within her department so that she did less teaching.

It seems odd to me that the school would move straight to recruiting externally. I’d have thought they would only recruit externally if they had failed to find a suitable internal candidate.

Good luck!

We do need a whole extra teacher as the current TLR holder is leaving so their teaching allocation (near enough a full 1.0 timetable) needs recruiting for.

So you may need a whole extra teacher but, unless you teach the same subject as the person who is leaving, the new person will need to replace the person who is leaving rather than you.

For example, if the person who is leaving is a history teacher, and you are an English teacher, they will need a new history teacher, not a new English teacher.

Obviously if you both you and the person leaving teach the same subject, they will need a new teacher of that subject (assuming that you aren’t already over staffed and/or that other under-timetabled staff can’t be utilised).

Yes, it's a subject responsibility TLR, as I believe most are these days (no money for much else!).

You don’t usually need to do a full application with references if you’re internal. There’s usually much more scaled back paperwork. An internal form or they ask you to write a letter of application.

Ask HR or the head’s PA for the process for internal candidates.

Just to update, both the HR and the head initially said 'apply as you would if you were external' until I asked them if they really needed me to give them my date of birth and all that again...

Eventually said just do the supporting statement/letter (sensible) which I did and I've an interview next week 🙂
