Becoming an online tutor

Hi all, I would like to begin slowly tutoring. I can't commit to in person sessions due to childcare but thought I would begin slowly dipping my toe into the tutoring world by doing some online sessions before moving to in person once my children are older. Does anyone have an online tutoring platform they would recommend? Also do I have to notify my school that I am doing it? Thanks.

I work for a children's reading charity called Doorstep Library and we have lots of volunteers who read with primary school children online. You just need to be UK-based. You can do it regularly once a week or less often, depending on your availability. Check it out and let me know if you have any questions!

I don't think you meant volunteering for free!
Do you need to use a platform? Could you not advertise locally and you'll start building your client base by word of mouth? I don't think you have to tell your school, but I probably would as a courtesy. It's also not good practice to tutor students from your own school. Good luck!

I was in the same position about 2 months ago and managed to grow my tutoring without every doing a face to face class! I found this free tutoring directory called Tutor Lab im not sure if you have heard it but i managed to get all my students from it i would highly recommend!

I found the book ‘From Teacher to Tutor’ really useful when I was getting going as a tutor. As a qualified teacher you might try the Teacher to Your Home site - I did face to face through them and gradually moved to completely self employed finding my own students etc but they also offer online if you prefer that. I didn’t ever do online with them but the company itself was good and communicative and it gave me a soft start into launching out completely by myself.
