Teacher pay scale - when do we move up?!

Hello all,
I am now an ECT 2 - taught the full academic year last year paid obviously on MP1 - and unsurprisingly expecting to rise to MP2 this year. Of course the difference was never actually going to be that big.

Just had our payslips today for September and am being paid exactly the same amount, so still MP1. This is now also technically under the new rate for this year anyway. Union says the pay should automatically rise each September. Other ECT has also not had their new scale implemented. I have not asked anyone else.

I just want to check from others experiences, does it generally start in September or kick in later? Are my school taking the piss or is this normal?

This school is not a nice replace to work full stop so it’s left me fuming (last straw type fuming) which may be totally irrational - so I wanted to check in with all of you!

Im on my late 30s with a 15 year long career in schools (HLTA) and early years settings before I underwent teacher training so I’m not naive to what places can get up to. Can they hold me on MP1?

thanks all for your help (and I’ll breathe now!)

Schools I work in have usually implemented from about November, and backdated.

However, I would get confirmation that you will be up to M2 this year.

Not unusual at all. Most schools have a processing delay with payroll and the rise usually goes in somewhere between October-December with backdated pay.

Ours is usually December and backdated- feels like a nice Christmas bonus! You’re probably best speaking to your colleagues to find out when you’d usually get it at your school, and speak to your business manager about moving up the pay scale. But don’t worry, it is normal to not get the pay rise in September!

After the finance committee meeting of the governors. It'll be backdated.

It may move up in October or November with backdated pay

Unlikely your school have had performance reviews and pay recommendations checked yet, or had time to implement the new uplift. Sometimes it all comes at once, and sometimes you get one before the other. If your induction is on track, you're likely to get both by the end of the next month or two.

Have never had it in September, always around November.

Thank you everyone - I have calmed down considerably! (Can you tell I was tense writing that post?) :)
Pay day was just in the midst of a truly horrible week and it was the final straw. I have spoken (politely) with HR and indeed they have to have a review and it will likely be November and back dated.

I have spent my whole 15 year career in schools and EY settings and have never known an SLT like mine and this just pushed me over - so I am relieved and thank you for taking the time to reply to me :)

I'm glad you're feeling better about this, OP. As others have said, it's very normal to get the pay rise in November or December with back pay, once the performance management cycle has been completed and pay awards have been signed off by governors. If you receive Universal Credit and the backdated pay is enough to affect your payments then you can ask payroll to stagger your back pay.

You had poor advice from your union on this occasion.
