UPS1 to UPS2

I've been on UPS1 for 4 years (including 2 years of mat leave).
To move to UPS2 what do I need to do? I thiught i had to apply like I did to move to UPS1 but the pay policy only talks about moving from MPS to UPS.

I would ask for a meeting to discuss this. I think when I did it, I had to show more subject leadership and whole school responsibility. Make sure you're in a school you want to stay in, as if you do manage to get UPS 2, you're very expensive to other schools and in my experience, most schools won't pay you over MPS6 anyway. Good luck!

I would ask at your appraisal review meeting to move up. You are eligible to move up after 2 years, regardless of going on maternity leave.

The maternity leave shouldn't be an issue, but is it not the case that you don't move up automatically? It might have changed as I did it about 10 years ago, but you had to prove certain things and meet targets, providing evidence, before you could move up.

Thanks everyone. I'll have a chat with the head next week.

Before you do that it will be worth checking your school’s pay policy. That should set out the arrangements for pay progression.

It doesn't. It just talks about moving from MPS to UPS.

The pay policy should also say something about progression within a pay range.

Schools’ policies on pay progression should link to the annual appraisal process (appraisal reports should include a recommendation on pay, where relevant) so it might be worth checking your appraisal policy too.

I was told the 2 year thing was a myth. I moved up annually from UPS1 to 3 automatically.

I’ve just looked this up, and NEU says it used to be in the STPCD, but was taken out in 2012 and is now at the discretion of the school. So it will depend on your school’s policy. Mine is review every 2 years for UPS.

Trouble is the policy says bugger all about it!
