Starting tutoring

Hi all,
I am already dreading starting back in September and dealing with the constant pressure/scrutiny that comes with the job. Have been teaching for 13 years and still LOVE teaching in the classroom but not sure I can put up with everything else that comes with the job for another 13 years.
Have recently been thinking about tutoring but honestly have no idea where to start or how to set it up. If anyone has any start up tips/advice, I'd be really grateful if you could share!

If you are on Facebook there are some really helpful supportive groups:
Tutors who thrive - grow your tutoring business
Twinkl private tutors
Tutors supporting tutors
Katie's tutor support
Good luck.

I was an early years teacher for 25 years. Now I'm a tutor, working for myself, supporting children one to one with early reading, phonics and maths. Most of the children I work with have additional learning needs such as dyslexia and ADHD. I love it and find it so rewarding.

Do feel free to ask any questions. I think it's all the nice bits of teaching, without the school politics and stresses.

I am also interested in this. So I am assuming you can:

  • advertise yourself on Google businesses with a website and people will see it?
  • Do you need a separate phone number, like a business phone?
  • I am on the DBS update service. How can families see this, as I assume they will ask?
  • How do families pay you? In cash? Do you give them your bank details?
  • Do you bring a whiteboard and pen with you, some stationary, exercise books etc or do you expect the children to have these?

Sorry if these questions seem obvious but I don't know. Thanks for any advice on these questions.

Yes I have my own website (Wix) and Google business listing, Facebook business page and Instagram. New families find me through all of these as well as through word of mouth.

I do annual safeguarding training for tutors through the NSPCC and I have an enhanced DBS on the update service, through the tutor's association.

People pay by bank transfer. I have clear written terms and conditions, explaining that tutoring is a weekly termtime commitment and payment must be monthly in advance.

I don't have a separate phone number but do have a separate email address. I try to keep all admin to email, though there's inevitably a bit of WhatsApping. Some tutors have a business WhatsApp.

The children all come to me, at my home. I have all my resources to hand and it saves me so much time travelling. I can then fit in three 50 minute sessions each evening after school. I have some home ed children during the day too. All my pupils are Primary and most have some additional learning needs, eg dyslexia or ADHD.

I have whiteboards and pens, maths manipulatives, reading books, games, phonics resources - lots of resources! But I have built these up steadily over a few years.

Amazing, thank you.
