Gift from line manager?

Feeling unexpectedly quite peeved.

Worked really bloody hard all year and nothing from LM. At all. No comment / card / gift.

Some do in our place and some don't, no consistency.

Did yours?

I never have in my school!

thatone · 19/07/2025 10:10

I would not expect anything.

noblegiraffe · 19/07/2025 10:32

I got a card and a gift but that's because my HOD is good at that sort of thing. Previous line managers not so much. It's out of her own pocket so I appreciate it but wouldn't expect it.

Stiffnewknee · 19/07/2025 13:09

Nah, don’t think I ever had one in 20 years. The only exception is when I left each school but that was more from the whole department.

Willquery123 · 19/07/2025 17:19

Oh. Maybe the people I have had before have raised my expectations!

I usually take treats in for my team and make an effort to say a personal thank you.

I can't buy a gift for everyone as I have a large team and it would cost a fortune.

I do usually buy my line manager a small present and card for supporting me through the year (but she is lovely and brilliant).

I got a plant, only because I make a decent playdough

Smeegall · 20/07/2025 08:00

Going to be a bit mean here and say you are ultimately being paid as a reward for doing your job.

Yes it's nice to say thank you - but I think everybody's on their knees at my school and I wouldn't be upset if my line manager didn't get me a thank you.

Teapleasemilknosugar · 20/07/2025 08:29

Yes I did, Primary though if that makes a difference. I have worked in a number of different schools and always get a gift from LM.

FourEyesGood · 20/07/2025 13:35

No line manager has ever bought me an end-of-year present! I’ve had presents when leaving a job, but otherwise, I wouldn’t expect anything.

Why would you? You are being paid a salary to do your job. If you are leaving then that is different.

I got a nice hand-written card and a big slab of chocolate from the poor sod of an AH that has to line-manage me. Much appreciated but not necessary. However, it is nice to be treated.

HoD is not my line manager as I also manage a different small team. We went out on the lash last night which was great fun. Will probably take him a present from my holiday to say thanks for being a great HoD/laugh/support this year.

pinotnow · 24/07/2025 20:51

I line manage a team of 10 people, which is a lot of money to me if spending £5-£10 per person. I stopped doing a gifts a couple of years ago when a few people in the team failed to say thank you/did weird little smiles and put the gift in their bag wordlessly. Other people in the team forbid me to go to the time, money and expense ever again and I took the advice! Now I bring chocolates/cakes for everyone to share, which is a lot cheaper and not nothing.

CeciliaMars · 28/07/2025 10:51

Never had one! Maybe a drink in the pub if you're lucky. They don't get paid significantly more than you really... I don't think it's the done thing at all.

EverythingElseIsTaken · 06/08/2025 09:53

My head teacher got me a bottle of gin! I only line manage one person and I know she loves scented candles and things from The White Company so I usually get her something from there at the end of the year.

marblebutterfly · 14/08/2025 18:49

I have always got a bottle of wine and my first HoD as an NQT used to do little gift bags. I have only ever worked in tiny departments though so I think it's more feasible than if I'd worked at a larger school with a 6th form for example.
