Evening all

Just want to pick your brains please, if you don't mind sharing...thank you in advance! Flowers

  1. Do you get any non-contact time, if so, how much?
  2. Do you cover long-term absences and if so, what is the longest stint you've done and were you remunerated differently?
  3. Does your contract state the type or duration of cover you do?
  4. How many are in your team and do you ever team-teach?
  5. How are you deployed when not covering a class?
  6. How much support do you get with poor behaviour?
  7. If you don't mind sharing, what is your net pay monthly/pro-rated?
  8. Finally, how long have you been in role and how long do you see yourself in it?

Many thanks in advance and thanks for all you do x Wine

Not a cover supervisor but I can surely answer for you as you’ve had no responses on here:

  1. Non contact time can vary - it depends on the workload required and how many Cover Supervisors you have - we have a team of 5 and they at least have 3 non contact periods a week - they are tasked with other support duties though.

  2. LTA cover can be a possibility especially if they have QTS and they are a specialist in the subject - we currently have a cover supervisor covering a maternity in maths (will be 9 months) - they were a maths teacher before but stepped back as they approach retirement and didn’t want the ‘full commitment’ of being a teacher.

  3. Contracts just state that they are employed to cover classes in the absence of a teacher with the duration set by the school based on the requirements.

  4. 5 cover supervisors and team teaching can be the norm but not regular.

  5. As stated above Cover Supervisors are generally used for administrative/support duties - they could cover in the school office, do photocopying, prepare resources or support a teacher with TA support if needed.

  6. Behaviour is managed through the same policy - learning support team can be contacted on teams.

Salaries can vary by school - my CS earn about £30k a year so about £2k a month give or take. The cover supervisor who is covering maternity in maths is being topped up as they have taken on the additional responsibilities.

Many see the cover supervisor role as an insight into the classroom and planning a teaching career, they’re taking a break from being a full time teacher before deciding what to do next or they are approaching retirement.

Hope that helps.
