To quit before/after 31 May

I got asked to attend a meeting where I was told my subject was being cut and I was being made redundant (although have a three year protection from being totally cut).

All the work I did…all the extra hours. I built my department from scratch and got my kids last year to an average of +2 grades above their predictions. And it was just pulled with no conversation.

Not enough pupils chose it for GCSE (apparently), they need to save money, want to focus on STEM blah blah

So I applied for some jobs and got one on Friday. However I don’t think I will get the contract through by the 31 May because it is out of teaching.

Should I pre-warn my HT? Quit by the deadline? Or just wait until I do get the contract through?

i don’t really know what to do.

If you have got a new job for September, you need to resign your current job before the 31st May. It doesn't matter if you have received the contract.

Yes but what if something happens with the new job and they withdraw it?

That actually happened to me two weeks ago. Got the job. Was all great and then I got an email to say they were doing an internal reorganisation and could no longer offer me a formal role. Luckily I hadn’t resigned.

So this week I had another interview and got another job.

Its made me very nervous about just resigning without the contract.

There is no easy answer here. If you think this new job is going to work out, you're going to have to resign before the end of half term. To be honest, it sounds like you're done with teaching so it's probably a good thing your hand is being forced.

I would be asking your new employer to send you an offer letter and explain that you would like the offer in writing before you resign. It won’t take them long to get this letter to you.

What @MN2025 said is a good idea.
Ring/email - explain that the resignation deadline for your current post is 31/5 and could they send you a formal offer in writing prior to this date before you resign.

Depending on your relationship with the head teacher could you speak to him/her and explain the situation? If you are being made redundant, they may be willing to accept a resignation after 31/5.

I hope it all works out for you!

You won’t get a contract for ages but you should have a job offer letter.

Thanks everyone- I am going to chase an offer letter and take the risk and resign before deadline.
