Was I wrong for sending my student to the principal's office?

Hello. I am a high school teacher. Last week, a student came to class wearing very beachy clothes. He was wearing a tank top, swim trunks, and sneakers. I found it disrespectful that he was dressed like this, told him that we are not on the beach, we are in a school, and sent him to the principal's office. I heard that at the principal's office, he accused me of being dressed as if I were going to the beach too because I was wearing flip-flops. Actually, I was wearing pink Havaiana flip-flops, but also a sweater over a dress shirt, skinny jeans, and a scarf around my neck. I don't think my outfit was beachy at all, but still, I am wondering: was it wrong that I sent him to the principal's office?

This depends on what your school's dress code is. It does sound as you were very casual - I would never wear Havaianas and jeans to work!

Oh actually I am not from the UK

Well what’s the dress code for students and staff?

TheShyOP · 28/04/2025 21:00

To be honest, I don't remember the dress code in all its details, but I'm sure that beachy clothes are not allowed. Many female teachers do wear sandals and flip-flops, though.

you don’t know the dress code, yet you’re sending students to the principal’s office whilst wearing flip flops yourself… I can see why the student is annoyed!

If you have dress standards for children, staff need to exceed them.

I'm not agreeing that staff need to be dressed more smartly than students. We do a physical job where we move around a lot, carry heavy objects (e.g. piles of books), often bend down etc. while students spend most of their day sitting down.

But I do agree there either needs to be a set dress code, or you need to accept whatever pupils wear. Otherwise it's a situation where staff make arbitrary decisions which is unfair on students.

I agree!!!

Some teachers at my school need to look in the mirror and think: "is this too much flesh?". Then put something on.

I don't agree that we do a physical job.

PE teachers wear sports kit all day

Woodwork teachers wear an overall.

Maths teacher should dress smartly.

Okay but I feel like my outfit was far more appropriate than his, wasn’t it? He came to class in swim trunks and a tank top, while I was wearing a sweater, a dress shirt and jeans. I just chose to wear flip-flops, which I think I had the right to do, considering I was fully covered.

OP, I think you're missing the point!

Newrumpus · 30/04/2025 06:50

Swimming trunks in the classroom?! Nobody can think that that is OK.

Leafy74 · 30/04/2025 11:35

Was he making a point about double standards?
If he was, I like this guy!

Yes, right? I don’t understand how those could be considered more appropriate than flip-flops.

Personally, I don't see any double standards. He was dressed as if he were going to the beach, and I was dressed normally.

Is he allowed to wear flip flops?

Lolabirdy · 11/05/2025 08:57

I think you’re right. His outfit was beachy, yours wasn’t. Nevertheless it does depend on your school’s dress code. What did the principal say?

The principal didn’t say anything to me. He said it’s completely normal for me to wear flip-flops, but not normal for him to wear swim trunks and a tank top to class.
