Thinking of leaving

I took a role on in December (negotiated early leave due to new school needing me. Old school agreed), and it’s really not working out how I hoped it would.

I have never ever left a place this soon, normally I keep going and I’ll see past problems. But this time I can’t. It’s just really not what I want and the whole place is entirely disorganised.

I just need some advice, do I keep going and accept something I’m not entirely happy with and have everyone think “she’s only been here 5 mins” or do I follow my gut and start looking?

Imagine yourself in the same school this time next year. Hope does that thought make you feel? If it’s dread, get looking on TES. It doesn’t matter if your current colleagues think ‘She’s only been here 5 mins’ - do what you need to do.

I haven't left quickly, but left a school I had been at a few years when I realised that the problems in the school were never going to improve. I had spent a couple of years thinking things would change, but they weren't

I am glad I moved on. I still speak to people from previous school and things have just got worse!

Try not to worry about what people think, you have to do what's right for you!

4 months isn’t much time at all. I would give it a year at least - can you not address the issues with your line manager? See if things improve over the last few months and if not you’ve got plenty of time to look for a new role with a January 2026 start!

I disagree, you’ve done over a term now which is more than enough time to suss a place out. My initial gut feeling about a school after a few weeks was never wrong, let alone over a term. Do what’s right for you and don’t worry about what others say, life is too short.

I’ve just feel like things aren’t going to improve. It’s a tricky situation but I’ve given it all I can and I’m more mentally drained than I’ve ever been before

@ThePerkyCoralPoet I totally get that, I meant that I disagree with the poster telling you to give it more time. Your gut feeling is rarely wrong and life is too short. Start looking around for something else. Good luck x

I think go with your gut - I once joined a school at April and by May I had a gut feeling it wasn't right. However, I didn't act on it and missed the May deadline and ended up having to stay until Christmas. It was awful and long and I wish I'd have listened to my gut sooner!

Good luck with whatever decision you make. Do what is right for you alone xx

When you know you know. Wishing you well. x

I’ve seen a job. I’ve phoned the school. I’m planning to visit. I don’t want to ruffle feathers but I like the look of it. Might be slightly out of reach though I may be looking at something I’m not skilled enough for. However I like the look of the role and the job ad! X

Thank you so much. I was torn, I’ve lost sleep over it some nights worrying that they’ll hate me for making this choice. But in reality, the only person it impacts, is me. Im trying not to scattergun and apply everywhere. Just choosing a role that seems like it aligns with my career goals. Xx

Good on you! 😊 good luck with it, keep us posted xx

PS I applied and interviewed for a job that I thought was a bit out of my reach and ended up getting it - as long as you can show passion, adaptability and willing then you're in with a strong shot I think ❤️
