What are 'naughty' names to you as a teacher?

I'm a teacher and I'm also expecting my second child and I really love the name 'Kit', but in my experience a lot of names that begin with 'K' are for children who make bad choices😅

Has anyone taught a Kit that fits that stereotype? What are some other names that just seem to have a reputation for being the 'naughty kid'?

-den names e.g. Hayden/Kayden/Jayden

Ava

Frankie

I have only ever taught 1 Kit and he was an absolute angel!

I don’t tend to subscribe to the whole “K names and -den names are awful” malarkey because IMO it’s just rooted in classism. However, I will say I am yet to meet a Mason who is well-mannered or at the very least, quiet!

CandyCane457 · 13/03/2025 17:19

I’ve never taught a Kit but I’d agree with the Kayden/Jayden thing.

Also Cody and Dale!

redsquirrel07 · 13/03/2025 17:25

Jay
McKenzie
Brooke
Louie/Louis
Summer
Brody
Cade/Kaiden
Lola

Jake, Charlie, Fin and Joe I find hit or miss

All just on my personal experience though, some may disagree!

I’m a TA not a teacher but we have a Christopher known as Kit and he’s lovely!

BG2015 · 13/03/2025 19:39

Never taught a Kit!

sakura06 · 15/03/2025 07:18

The only Kit I’ve ever taught was lovely. It’s a great name!

EdithGrantham · 15/03/2025 13:32

I think most names which are very popular end up being "naughty" because of the sheer volume of children with that name and you end up remembering children who have been more difficult to deal with. For instance I've taught at least 4 "naughty" Alfies but most of the "naughty" children I have taught haven't been called Alfie

Elendel · 15/03/2025 19:19

The only ever Kit I taught was a girl. She was delightful.

Alfie is definitely high on my list, as are many other shortened legal boys' names: Ted, Robbie, Kenzie, DJ.

On the girls' side it tends to be those with -ey endings - Lacey, Kacey, Macey - or those with virtue-based names: Angel, Faith, Hope, among others, who are inevitably the opposite of their given names.

Anything with a phonetically correct, but wrong spelling (excluding those where its correct in another country/tradition).

Toffeesgirl · 17/03/2025 19:56

Any first name that's a surname - Harrison, Taylor, Jackson, Tyler etc

Lancrelady80 · 18/03/2025 20:40

I agree with the -den names (Although to be fair I have one in my class who is challenging that as gorgeous 80% of the time.

Lewis is usually a bad sign! And often J names here for boys.

Eva / Eve /Ava variants have been tricky too.

Malbecfan · 19/03/2025 20:51

The Kit I have taught was a girl who was one of DD2's best friends and a truly delightful individual.

The Ava I teach now is fabulous, but I have taught others who were not so nice.

Istilldontlikeolives · 19/03/2025 21:16

Used to be Kai and Freddie.

ThePerkyCoralPoet · 20/03/2025 12:34

Student’s named Riley tend to be rather problematic

Liliol · 22/03/2025 20:22

Connor

monkeysox · 23/03/2025 08:08

Josh, Leo,

FrenchFancie · 23/03/2025 21:39

Ava is sadly off my list forever. Shame because I liked the name until I had a tricky one as a TA.

boys names - less obvious stand outs but I had a Samuel who nearly drove me to drink. I’ve known three boys called Lewis - two were…. Interesting, one was an absolute angel.

Gymrabbit · 24/03/2025 22:09

For boys names ending in y or ie tend to be an issue particularly things like Frankie and Alfie.
For girls similar really and modern style names like Taylor too.
I would assume that Kit would be quite middle class or a bit arty so probably not naughty.

Any student who has an unusual name linked to a character on a tv show popular at the time of their birth, particularly if it is spelt incorrectly.
