Dn starting to look for teaching jobs...any advice for a new ECT?

As above, my lovely nephew is starting to look for secondary teaching jobs (humanities subject)

Any advice on the best type of school for a new ECT? Small, large? Mat?

Things to look for, run a mile from etc?

I worked in education, but many years ago and the landscape is now totally different.

He has worked as an LSA and volunteered in a local school too prior to starting the pgce.

(I know you're all going to say "tell him not to!" But that ship has sailed!..)

Some posters here are very anti academies and MATs in particular.

Personally, I don't think any one type of school is better or worse than any other. My daughter is in her 3rd year of teaching at a MAT and absolutely loves it.

What I think is most important is the quality of school leadership. My daughter has been very lucky in that respect but how you can tell in advance I'm afraid I have no idea, other than by reading what the latest Ofsted reports say about the quality of leadership and management. They reports won't tell the whole story, but will be a start.

What sort of area is he looking in - or is he happy to move anywhere in the country?

Sorry. Posted too soon.

My daughter was lucky to be offered a job at a school in the same MAT as the one she did most of her training in. She did a SCITT and the impression I get is that the schools involved in that took responsibility for helping their trainees find jobs.

From my very very limited experience, that doesn't happen so much with schools who provide placements for those doing traditional University-based PGCEs.

Good luck to him and I hope he finds a supportive first school.

Yes he is, thank you.

I thought the Scitt route would be better for him, tbh but not my child, so...(not that either of my dds would listen either! 😊)

I imagine more jobs will be appearing after Easter (it always used to be that way)

It's more what should he look for in a supportive school iyswim?

I'm so long out of it I can't really advise
