AI tips, uses and pitfalls?

I've only just started cautiously dipping my toe into the waters of AI, with mixed but promising results so far, but god I could definitely do with something that cuts down the workload a tiny bit!

Anyone interested in a thread to share what works and what doesn't? I'm a secondary MFL teacher btw. So far I've used ChatGPT and Copilot. Model A Level literature essay was brilliant, but Powerpoints / presentations so far not very good at all.

Does anyone use it for anything else other than classroom resources?

I’ve used ChatGPT for planning ideas. I hadn’t thought of using it for model answers! Genius!

It was brilliant, though I have colleagues who said theirs didn't turn out amazingly. I gave it a past paper essay question and a word limit and it produced basically a perfect response, very concise and well-structured. With Powerpoints I can't seem to get it to really understand what I want, however specific I am with the prompt.

What kind of prompts did you give it to get planning ideas, @GretchenWienersHair ?

I give it my learning objective, age group, time frame and intended outcomes and it gives me a breakdown of the lesson. It’s great! We don’t have very solid SOLs or medium and long term plans in my school, so I feel like I’m often chasing my own tail.

Ah ok that makes sense. In my department we have detailed schemes and full sets of power points for all modules, but some of the resources really need updating.

I've found it's excellent for three things so far:

"Make me an A4 handout based on this news article with 5 comprehension questions including a calculation, and suggested answers."

"Find me a video explaining [topic] no more than 5 years old, lasting 5-10 minutes."

"Make a glossary of words and expressions found in this article that would not be understood by someone with a reading age of 11 or less."

These are great!

Do you use Copilot for creating pictures?

Phineyj · 17/02/2025 15:55

I hate AI generated pictures! Soo creepy. I get a real uncanny valley from them.

To be fair you do have to watch it on the wordy stuff too. Its reading comp is better than the average teenager (and way quicker) but it does sometimes misunderstand.

Thanks for the latest posts- I didn't spot them until today! I haven't used AI for creating pictures, but it might be useful for practising the photo card element of the GCSE speaking exam.
