Class residential

As a part time member of staff, can I be forced to stay on a week long class residential?
If so, can I be forced to share a room with another staff member?

You can't be forced to do any kind of residential, full or part time. The school don't own you for 24 hours a day. It's quite likely you will have other responsibilities outside of teaching kids, pets, elderly relatives. Just say no.

There's usually someone else who's only too happy to have a week away from their normal routine but if not the trip doesn't run and it's as simple as that.

Absolutely as Chickenblanket says... if it doesn't work for you, or if you simply don't want to, say no. There's certainly no 'forcing' you. I know some SLTs do put the pressure on... "it's for the chiiiildren.." but having been it that situation, with childcare to consider, I just said that no.

Usually with residentials they ask for volunteers.

If it’s primary - then usually the class teachers of the year group attending, support staff and a member of the senior leadership team (usually the deputy) - need a balance of male and female staff it is mixed gender attending.

Secondary - again, SLT and a mix of male and female teachers.

If you are part time and cannot go as you have other commitments then you need to let the trip organiser know, I’m sure there would be someone who would want to go instead!!

In regards to room share. Yes it is common but you can request for medical reasons to have your own room. When I have attended residentials, I have shared on occasions but also had my own room as well….

No you definitely don't have to go, you should be asked if you are happy to go. I have known part time staff to swap half way through the week. I have also known staff to go just for the day but not stay for the night. We usually end up having a few members of staff from other year groups go, as they are happy to go.
