Unqualified teacher pay scale (but I'm qualified!)

Just that really... I'm currently employed as a cover teacher, working 8-3.
I'm on the unqualified teacher scale (point1) but I'm actually a UPS2 teacher. I feel like they are getting a bargain. I want to ask to move up the unqualified pay scale a few notches in September at least.
What do you think? Is it just the nature of being a cover teacher?
No comments as to why I'm not in a 'teaching' position please.

Why aren't you on the qualified pay scale? They are definitely getting a bargain! I hope you're not doing any work more than the minimum for the role you've got?!!

InDogweRust · 05/02/2025 21:03

Unfortunately the issue is you are in a role that doesn't require the level of qualification you have. They are paying you for the role you are doing and not the qualifications/experience you have.

I could be a qualified doctor, and if i choose to go and work retail, i'll be paid the salary of someone who works in retail, not a doctors wage.

Yes totally agree I'm not working beyond my hours. I would like to be further up the scale though to reflect my experience so might ask for September

Are you planning the lessons and marking the students' work?

tellmesomethingtrue · 05/02/2025 23:07

No, I'm delivering the lessons and managing behaviour

You can ask but for context what you describe would be considered (and paid as) a cover supervisor role in my experience.

Can I be forced to stay all week on a class residential?
If so Can I be forced to share a room with another staff member?

Yeah, you're screwed.
If you're on point 1 unqualified then your take home is about £1500 a month after tax.
As a cover supervisor, you would be pro rated to 39 weeks - at the TOP of the support staff CS scale full-time (after five years where I am) you will be on the same: about £1500 a month because of pro rata.
Support staff allows you to go up a point up to the end of whatever scale they advertised the post at - but because it is so badly paid, you'll never get a decent net pay: you can only get that by doing supply rates (but no holiday pay and not secure) or being seconded supply (hard to get these days for day-to-day).
In theory, will you go up each year on the scale you are on because if so, point 2 is £1696/month which is better than many who are also QTS but on the support staff scale. If you got to point 6 on the non-qualified scale you'd be on £2327 a month, which for cover, most of us would kill for!

I'd be amazed if they were prepared to pay you the top of the unqualified scale though - not without class responsibility, a form or some T+L or pastoral responsibility.
Everyone is squeezed budget-wise.
Good luck/well done if you do manage to negotiate though.
