Headteacher affair

If a headteacher is having an affair with a junior admin person is it something that should be reported to governors? Both are married if that’s relevant.

I don't know the answer but how on earth does anyone who works in school at the moment have the time, or the energy? I rarely have time for a wee, let alone anything else. 😉

Is it impacting their ability to do their jobs?

I don’t believe so.

It's not anyone else's business is it?

I don’t believe so.

Then no. Keep schtum; it’s no one else’s business but theirs and their partners’.

You need to check the policy. Most workplaces (including schools) require workplace relationships to be declared for conflict-of-interest reasons.

I suppose my concern is two fold

  1. if things go wrong the junior person is very vulnerable
  2. Since most of the staff witnessed the affair at a recent function surely it compromises Head’s ability to manage/discipline/report wrongdoing etc. as a staff member could hold it over him.

i will try to look up the policy out of interest. Luckily it doesn’t affect me personally but I have lost all respect for both of them.

Does the headteacher directly line manage the junior employee? If they do that is an issue and a conflict of interest….. BUT. As long as it is legal and not a child/student then not an issue to you or any other colleagues… IT will be an issue for them and their respective spouses though.

There is nothing to be done here. I have known many staff relationships in my time. I have known a Headteacher and deputy head get married, working in the same school. I have known teaching staff get together and with support staff. It happens. A Headteacher married a TA in one of my schools. The deputy head then became the TA's line manager, to overcome the conflict of interest, but even then, we all know that the headteacher is the big boss anyway. The affair in this particular case, may create lots of opinions and views, it's not great for their partners ofcourse, but it's not illegal. Consenting adults can do what they want. It's not anyone's business. Sometimes, people in the workplace get together at all levels. There is not any impact on the children, so there is nothing to be done here. People are allowed to get together with a colleague if they want to.

I am genuinely amazed that none of you have encountered a ‘close and personal relationships’ policy.

A huge proportion of people meet their partners at work.
