Going back into teaching.... maybe

I've been out of it properly for 10 years. Did a year and a half just before Covid hit but it was part time FE work so was a walk in the park

Circumstances have changed and now I need something permanent so I'm considering biting the bullet and going back to teaching full time. I really fell out of love with it but needs must.

I teach maths so theoretically SHOULD be able to find a job quite easily, but in the time I've been away what have I missed??
Is it still starters, mains, plenary?
Student led learning? Self assessment still all the rage? Any new buzzwords I need to learn?

Am I going to regret this and fall into a pit of despair?
🥲

I became a maths teacher a couple of years ago. I really enjoy it! Maths is timeless and universal, so you will find it very familiar.

Student-led learning isn’t a thing in most schools (mainly because unsurprisingly students learn much worse when they lead the leaning). I don’t know what you mean by self-assessment (I assess them during the lessons via questioning and circulating and using online tools and I also assess them when I mark their tests) but I do encourage them to reflect on the progress they are making.

I do starters every lesson (normally a recall starter, as a way of assessing) but I don’t always bother with plenaries.

I don’t know of buzzwords you need to learn: I would just focus on choosing the right school for you and then the joy of teaching. For me teaching can be a real pleasure and I am really happy with my school and most of my classes. This year I have year groups from year 8 to year 13.
