Sickness absence question

madamegaskell · 28/12/2024 11:04

I have been a teacher for 18 years (NC for this) and have only ever had 2/3 days off due to illness in that period.

I had surgery on the 17th of December, and did not return to school before we broke up on the 20th. I was able to self certify for those 4 days.

I am still recovering from surgery and feel like I may need another week or two off before I return. We are due back on 6th Jan.

Would I need a drs note for first week back? Or could I self certify for another 3 days before I need a drs note, as I believe that I can self certify for the first 7 days, but not sure if that is affected by the holidays?

I'm not sure but why don't you just go to the dr and ask for a sicknote from Monday for 2 weeks.

So that covers you for 10 working days.

I was in almost the same situation about 8 years ago, so things might have changed, but for me my holiday counted within that sickness period so needed a doctor's note.

You will need a sick note

TortolaParadise · 28/12/2024 23:49

Yes. you will need a fit for work certificate. Wishing you well.

If you are sick at the end of one term and then still sick at the beginning of the next with the same issue, won’t it count as one long period of sickness including the holiday period given your salary isn’t term time only?

TortolaParadise · 05/01/2025 23:21

Yes this should count as one period of absence. I hope you are on the mend. Take care.
