PPA and assessments

I know the A of PPA stands for assessment but should teachers be carrying out phonics assessments with individual children during PPA time?

PPA time should be non-contact shouldn't it? And if the whole of a teacher's PPA is given over to carrying out assessments with children, when is the teacher supposed to do the tasks they would usually do in PPA? I know what happens in reality - we do it on our own time - but in an ideal world where teachers weren't overworked and taken advantage of, what is the answer?

Thanks

No you shouldn't be asked to carry out assessments during PPA time. As you say, it's non-contact time.

There are plenty of non-contact elements to assessment which might be carried out during PPA time. You might mark tests, moderate with year group colleagues, upload data, analyse data to form intervention groups etc. Actually carrying out assessments though is definitely not what PPA time should be used for!

Thank you for replying. Do you know where I could find anything to support this? We've been asked to use our PPA for phonics assessments in response to querying when in the week we should fit the assessments in. There's never a reasonable amount of time given to carry them out.

Classic disregard for workload even though the issue of workload has been raised recently.
