Hi
I'm on a 0.6 contract (Wednesday to Friday). We're expecting the call any day. My HT has made it clear he'll expect me in on the Tuesday. I said only if I can sort childcare and he was really p**d off. Has anyone else been in this situation? Did you have to go in? My childcare is limited to nursery and they don't always have space available, especially last minute.

Absolutely no. Contact the union if he is being huffy or p@d off about it.

You are not contracted to do this day so they can’t expect you in. They can ‘ask’ and then give you the time back in lieu, but they cannot ‘expect‘… and they can’t use it against you.

There are plenty of teachers out there who are part time because of CC…

ThanksItHasPockets · 02/12/2024 16:48

Certainly not. You would be perfectly within your rights to have an entirely separate job on those days. You do not need to make yourself available.

Hellisemptyallthdevilsarehere · 02/12/2024 17:34

Even if they ask nicely and it suits you and they pay you for it, what do they want from you? Do you lead something? You can't teach a class you wouldn't normally, as Ofsted will see right through that.

MrsHamlet · 02/12/2024 17:53

You do not have to attend work on any day on which you do not normally work. It's in STPCD.

Geordiebabe85 · 02/12/2024 20:14

Thank you everyone!

I lead a couple of subjects and he said I'd be there to either support other staff who may need help with things like copying, break duties etc and to cover any class if the teacher is needed for an interview.

That's not appropriate. You are not employed to do those things.

This doesn't sound right to me. I would have been in two minds if they wanted you in a the safeguarding/literacy etc interview instead of having to ask a deputy/second to step in.

careerchange456 · 02/12/2024 21:10

Deputy/second isn't really how it works in a primary where people lead a few subjects.

But OP, you don't have to go in. Nobody can force you in on days you don't work. Our part time staff know that they can come in to support if they don't want to, but nobody can make them. It puts us in a pickle if some subjects were chose deep dives but not a lot else we can do.

ThanksItHasPockets · 02/12/2024 21:21

If the subjects that you lead are selected for a deep dive then the HT will have to make it clear in the phone call with the lead inspector that these conversations will have to take place on your working day of Wednesday.

It depends if @Geordiebabe85 is on a 0.6 FTE contract, or if they're on a W-Fr specific contract. That would determine what they are contracted to do.

HT can huff all he wants but he can't expect you in on your day off. You could maybe go in and make it clear to the Ofsted inspector that you've been asked to come in on your day off. See what they make of that.

Inspectors quite possibly won't be interested. We were told at the end of the first day that they also wanted to look at computing. Computing lead was off the next day and looking after her own children. Inspectors wanted to see the next in command for computing - most primaries have people leading several subjects, we certainly don't have a second in command! In the end the member of staff chose to come in but of course they would not be obliged to. I would have made the effort to go in on my non-work day if needed because we'd worked damn hard for Ofsted and I was invested in it. I wouldn't, however, expect the Head to put any pressure on me. What does he expect you to do with your child if the nursery can't take them?!

Next in command 🤣 it's me, myself and I!
My head seems to think I can just "sort childcare". Typical bloke who never "sorted childcare" for his own kids!
