Responding to Threats and Violence from ASN Students

I'm reaching out to express concern regarding a worrying incident that took place in class today. An Additional Support Needs student threatened to kill the teacher with a knife and subsequently engaged in aggressive physical behavior.

This is not an isolated incident. The student in question has a documented history of violent behavior, including multiple attacks on staff. Despite reporting previous incidents, it seems that no adequate measures have been taken to address the situation and ensure the safety of both staff and students.

The threat to kill the teacher with a knife appears to be an escalation which should be taken seriously given that the school has no safeguards in place to prevent a child from bringing a knife to school.

The teacher is understandably anxious about being around this student and feels unsafe.

I'm seeking advice and support on how to help the teacher navigate this situation. What steps should she take next? Your advice is greatly appreciated.

Is this a special school?

Is this a special school?

No, it's a mainstream primary school.

No advice but it sounds horrendous. Isn’t it half-term where you are?

azafata2 · 29/10/2024 14:48

Wow. There must be safeguarding policies to protect both the student and the staff. Have any referrals been made by the SENCO for CAMHS or any other assessment around behaviour ie; ADHD etc. This kid sounds really traumatised. What is the family situation? There must be something going on their young life to make them react like that. What has or is this kid witnessing outside school? Find out more information. If there is a history of this it is incredulous that no intervention for both the family and the student has been made. Speak to the DSL right away. Poor teacher and poor little child. Make sure the teacher does an incident report and write it in the accident book to cover herself for emotional stress if she needs some time off.

A number of regions had their half term last week.

This sounds very difficult, OP. The teacher needs to consult her union urgently.

The teacher must contact their union at a regional level immediately. They need protection from this child.

There is no doubt the child's situation is troubling and likely very very sad but the OP was about the safety of the teacher. The child probably does have a diagnosis and probably has had intervention but that doesn't protect the teacher in the here and now. Primary children are not all 'little' - I have taught Y4 boys who weigh more than I do. Primary children are very capable of hurting staff. Staff have a right to go to work feeling safe and knowing measures are in place to ensure their safety.
