Performance Management

I'm retiring next year after 29 years in the job. My head teacher knows this. I teach in primary.
I'm UPS3 and have just had my PF with my HT. All good and the three targets that were set have been achieved

He's given all staff a PF management target to research something that's interesting to them education wise and report back. We are apparently getting staff meeting time to do this. So for example some staff may look at low level disruption or the implementation of continuous provision continuing into KS1.

My enthusiasm for the job is waning each week but I always act professional and do my job but researching something just bores me rigid, particularly as I won't be sitting in his office next October discussing my achievements as I'll be retired.

I'm just going to have to do it arent it? 🙄

Do you know when it is that you have to report back?
If it’s this time next year when they’re reviewing the performance management targets and you’ll be long gone, then i wouldn’t bother. Well. Maybe seeing as you’re getting staff meeting time to do it, I’d maybe pick a focus and print some things off, so if you ever get asked how your research is going you’ll at least have something to show for it.
But if they’re expecting you all to report back before the end of the year, then maybe. It’s an awkward one especially if you are being given time to do it. Even though it’s a complete waste of time for you!

Is there really nothing even tangentially related to education that you might be interested to read an article about?

DoggerFisher · 29/10/2024 10:48

Slightly tongue in cheek here, but could you research sources of peer-to-peer support which teachers give each other? Would give you a valid reason to spend time on Mumsnet and on Dave Fountain's FB pensions site

BG2015 · 29/10/2024 13:06

@DoggerFisher a few of us have tongue in cheek said we're going to research things he won't like e.g the ridiculous use of cursive handwriting in reception

Again slightly tongue in cheek but what about researching the transferable skills that teachers have that are desirable or essential in other settings or jobs? Report back here and you'll have a fan club!

BG2015 · 29/10/2024 20:13

@Malbecfan that's brilliant

How about

Why does improving staff wellbeing improve outcomes for students and how is this achieved?

BG2015 · 30/10/2024 08:14

@pestothepenguin that's easy..... improve staff wellbeing by leaving!😂

Well ...

  1. Better motivated staff
  2. Higher levels of staff attendance
  3. Appropriate levels of staff retention/turnover
  4. Employer of choice, means school attracts the best staff
  5. Financial savings because of 2. and 3.

That's just off the top of my head

Sorry, missed part of your questions ...

  1. By caring and genuinely treating staff as individuals and showing interest
  2. By giving staff time off when they genuinely need it
  3. By, where possible, having fun and expressing thanks eg training day on last day of term - provide lunch
  4. Give good development opportunities including mentoring
  5. Give interesting work
  6. Allow staff to make mistakes when innovating
  7. Supporting part time work requests where possible
  8. Promoting wellbeing e.g. advising time off for breast screening; health workshops; occupational health advice
  9. Manage poor performance properly

Don't do it. What's he going to do? Fire you???? Smile politely, ignore and move on.

BG2015 · 24/01/2025 21:37

This is my thread.

We are waiting for Ofsted, it's imminent - we believe it will be very soon so I'm hoping he'll not bother with mine.

You could read and summarise these if you wanted to. Or don’t bother.
