Help with this lesson observation please?!

Hi,
Hope I'm not misguided in posting this here but I'm desperately in need of inspiration.

I have an interview for a part time teaching position next week and a lesson observation is naturally part of the process.

I've been asked to plan an hour lesson for 25 mixed ability year 2 pupils on counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.

As I've been on maternity I feel completely out of touch and at a loss of where to even begin. I don't want to expect/waste time gathering practical resources when I'm there.. so do I take my own cubes etc ?! What activities do I do? Please inspire me!

Really clueless and stressed out as this job is perfect! :(

I'm secondary so not helping on specifics but generally.

Just buy some cheap counters if you need them. Take everything you need with you.

Remember interview lessons can say very little many schools no longer do them. Try and learn a few names and try and engage with the learners. Get a seating plan labelled with names and SEN and PP. ask for this in advance or to be available before the lesson. If you are using a computer take paper copies as a back up.

Praise and take reward stickers

Thank you so much, I hadn't even thought to ask for the seating plan!

Ask for the children to wear name labels rather than asking for a seating plan

BeeMe · 02/10/2024 17:49

I agree about asking for name labels and checking on any additional needs. Also ask if there will be a TA or another adult with the class. It would be fine to ask about what practical resources they have available.
Good Luck!

To clarify: The seating plan is an important document contain much information about the students- not just their names. It contains their ability,, send and PP LAC Status.

I would never at an interview ask for them to be wearing name labels already. If I wanted them to wear name labels you need to supply them and provide them to the children to write their name on. I would also be unimpressed as a class teacher if someone asked me to sort this for their interview lesson.

I'd definitely do something with manipulatives. As others have said, check what there is. If it was just 2s I'd try to link it to a story because that's a thing these days. Bead strings and counters come to mind. Board game? SpN - matching pairs - different coloured counters to match then counting them in 2s? I have some horrid popper things I'd cut into strips of 2. Good luck! I'm definitely UKS2.

The seating plan contains extremely sensitive data and I'm surprised that any school would email them to candidates.

For 2s, 5s and 10s, I'd want to do a numicon demonstration first (could use printed numicon and stick on the board, or put it on a PowerPoint). Lots of oral practice as a whole class (my turn/your turn etc.) Watch for children who are struggling to join in. Then give them an independent task (worksheet/whiteboard) and make sure it is adapted to suit different learners. Challenge more able to explain - explain how you know I won't say 27 when I'm counting in 5s. Some children may need to focus on 10s only. Have a task or activity ready just in case (could they order the numbers counting in 10s?).

Good luck!
