Teachers -do you pay more for lunches than a) students and b) advertised prices?

When a teacher queried paying more than the advertised price, they were told that is because there is VAT on staff food not on students.

Surely there should be a two tier public price if so? There currently isn't one at my school.

Thank you.

Yes we pay vat. What's the issue?

RechargeableGnu · 11/09/2024 18:35

Do you know what prices you're paying?

OP posts:
MrsHamlet · 11/09/2024 21:36

Yes. The price the kids pay, plus vat

RechargeableGnu · 11/09/2024 21:42

Sorry, I don't think I am being very clear.

So if the price says £2.50 then you all just know that VAT is on top? No additional info for staff prices?

We have a new cafe system at school and this wasn't the case with the old one!

Yes pay the vat on top, but no it isn’t terribly clear

MrsHamlet · 11/09/2024 21:44

Yes. A meal deal is £2.50 + Vat

Takoneko · 12/09/2024 06:32

Prices are put up as what the kids pay. Adults pay that price plus VAT. I’d just assumed that was the same everywhere.

overgrowntoddler · 12/09/2024 19:14

20%? Is this a trick question!

RainbowColouredRainbows · 12/09/2024 20:00

No, we get a discounted price to the kids 🤔

Avocadono · 12/09/2024 20:39

Ours are more than 20% more than the children's, and we're already in a county with ridiculously expensive meals. I think the adult portion is slightly bigger. I don't get them because they're too expensive though.

PumpkinPie2016 · 13/09/2024 19:10

Yes, it's always been the price kids pay plus VAT.

I always take packed lunch though as it works out quite expensive otherwise.

Justonemorecoffeeplease · 16/09/2024 12:34

Same as others. We pay the advertised price for kids plus VAT - have to do a quick mental calculation. Like a previous poster I usually bring my own lunch in (we've got a microwave and fridge in our departmental office) as the pupil's portions are both tiny and very expensive for the teenager stodge that our catering co provides.

Annony331 · 03/10/2024 01:23

£2.50. Students
£3.15 adults which are a larger portion size

Smeegall · 04/10/2024 06:29

Our canteen is astronomical

HideTheCroissants · 08/10/2024 18:29

I’m in a London primary so none of the children pay for lunch. Staff meals are £3.75 and the portions are larger than those for the children.

Gymrabbit · 08/10/2024 22:14

I’ve been teaching for 20 years in 5 different schools and have never heard of this VAT for staff thing. We all pay the same as the students.

Dendron123 · 13/10/2024 21:43

About 30 years ago I worked in a secondary school that announced we had to pay VAT. A lot of teachers stopped going to the canteen. To attract more riot control..(sorry, teachers) back in to the canteen they accidentally started forgetting to add our VAT on..

good96 · 14/10/2024 16:39

Yes - two prices for students and staff although as other posters have said, larger portions and staff get served in the staff room instead of having to queue up with pupils.

Catering contract is under review though. The service levels haven’t been great neither has the food quality…

lollymad · 19/10/2024 19:27

Wow, never noticed this. I generally only took the 'free' lunch in exchange for a duty at my old school though. Take pack up otherwise.
