Progression on upper pay scales

I've been on UPS1 for 10 years. When I've enquired about progressing I was fobbed off with various excuses. One of which was I I didn't have enough whole school influence, which wasn't possible due to my role. I have had successful appraisals every time and now have evidence of a wider school role plus we have a new head so this year I am applying to progress and am wondering, given the amount of time I've been on UPS1 I can request to go straight to UPS3. Of course they can say no, but are they potentially allowed to let me do that or should I apply for UPS2 this year and 3 next year? I know I should have done all this sooner but I'm much better informed now.

You need to look at your pay policy

Yes, I had a look but It's not clear whether you can.

I don’t think you can, UPS 2 this year then apply for UPS3 in two years time.

I would be demanding to be on UPS3 or I would be moving to a school that would give it. I would be applying for jobs left right and centre. They have given you UPS1 for 10 years and you have accepted it.

UPS in secondary schools is just a given progression. Some schools say you have to have a whole school target - but some say UPS is just part and parcel of progression.

Don't accept it and apply for jobs and push for UPS3 - you have the experience.

You should let your appraiser know you want to move to UPS2, and although the new approach is clearly away from needing a portfolio of evidence, I would make sure you have a list of ways you are contributing to the whole school in a 'substantial and sustained' way to support your discussion.

It’s common for pay policies to specify that UPS teachers can move up an increment only every other year. You need to check if this is the case in your school. If the school policy is unclear then request the LA or MAT policy as appropriate.
