Resigned and panicking!

I'm the sole parent/ breadwinner but couldn't handle working in a for-profit private school anymore. No resources/ pay freeze but trying to sell the school to parents on the basis of what were essentially, lies. It was tiring working somewhere at odds with my values as twee as that sounds.

But I'm seriously worried about the future. I've never resigned mid year (I won't be able to leave until Dec) before. I'm old enough to be expensive to employ. I also have serious and time consuming parenting responsibilities as a lone parent.

I'm panicking.

No need to feel worried, there's a massive shortage of teachers at the moment so I would say lots of adverts will start appearing in September. This gives you lots of time to start applying before December. Are you primary or secondary?

Don't panic. What phase / subject do you teach?

itwontletmechoose · 16/07/2024 13:24

Primary and I've never left mid year, like to see the year through with my class.

I think if you're honest about why you left at interview, you'll be snapped up. If you go into state schools, the problem you'll find though is that no-one is willing to pay more than M6. So after 20 years' of experience in my case, I couldn't get a job paying much more than £40k.
Have you considered tutoring? Round here, there's a massive demand for it. You could combine it with a few days of supply, and make your salary up to the equivalent of a full-time position.

I've tutored before for Grammar school entry and it's so intense... if I could find more low key tutoring it might work.

Yes I'm in England and state (and private!) seem determined to not actually honour the UPS... All my Welsh friends are fascinated by it as they get paid where they are on the scale...

I was paid under my pay scale and we didn't have the inflation rise so actually I'm the same as M6 currently is. Which is depressing as my actual salary is now less than when I worked in London 18 years ago 😂😬

It's going to be scary earning less but oh well.

OP, I’m so with you on the lies of the school and the lie discomfort.
We can’t be the only teachers uncomfortable with the lies that private schools wish us to collude in. 🧐

Don't panic @itwontletmechoose!

You have until December, which is plenty of time 🙂

Are you looking to stay in teaching?
