Will schools create a role for you if they really want you?

I’m doing my second placement and I’m gutted not to be hired there. A few people on my course have mentioned being offered jobs at their placement schools and I’d really hoped it would happen for me as I’ve felt so at home at the school.
a role came up, I applied but I was told a few days later the person who resigned had changed their mind. is this a normal thing to happen at schools or is that a fob off?

Most schools simply do have the budget to creat a role for you, however much they like you and think you would be a great addition to the team

I just don't think schools would create a role even if they could afford to - which they can't.

There is no way of knowing if you've been fobbed off. You need to move on.

Major typo in my response, sorry!
most schools do not have
apologies

We have, but only because it was someone so incredible we'd have been insane to let them go... and we were future proofing. It's not common at all.

Schools don't really have any budget these days to take on staff they don't need. That said if they have need for staff but outside your department year and they really like you they might be creative with the timetable to try and hold on to you. Don't take it personally if they don't though. It might just mean they are at capacity.

Also they shouldn't really be advertising a job until they've had a proper resignation.

I respond to this as a HT. There was an opportunity there and you applied but the postholder had retracted their resignation. If the school had accepted the retraction then I am afraid there is not much that can be done. Schools do not have budgets to miraculously create jobs. You need to move on now. Take the experience with you but leave without burning the bridges because there might be an opportunity in the future. Also to add, education is a small world. As a HT myself, I network with many local HTs so there are always the ‘informal’ conversations.
