Placement ended in April. I have a job for September; what do I do in the meantime?

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation/has encountered anyone in a similar situation and could dispense some advice.

I'll make a very long story short

  • Worked in a school for 3 years, then moved on because there were no opportunities to progress. Accepted a job with more responsibility at an academy
  • Started in September and left in April because the culture was extremely toxic
  • I found another job for September; but right now I am unemployed
  • When I applied for the September job I was still employed by the academy, so they still think that I was going to finish off the year

What could I do in the meantime? I thought of phoning up the school who has hired me for September and offer my time as a volunteer, but I'm afraid it would look really bad, like I cannot plan my decisions properly- which in all honesty is the truth. Toxic as the school was, I regret not having finished off the year neatly.

Do you have any advice?

I wouldn't suggest volunteering at the school you are going to work at. It will get them used to the idea that you will work for free.

Could you volunteer elsewhere? Or why not join a supply agency? A lot of people use this to find out what different schools are like.

AQA advertising for exam markers..

Lots of schools want exam invigilators

Depending on the school they may need you already - I would ask them if they’d consider employing you sooner.

Supply teaching is working for me

I'm also really worried that once they find out that my employment terminated in April they will rescind my offer; as mentioned, at the time of the application I was still employed, but during the interview I was not. They did not ask, I did not tell. However, once my reference comes in they will know. What are the chances of my offer being withdrawn?

I worked as a cleaner for 3 months for an agency to clean private homes. Great job.

I can't see why they would retract the offer, unless they feel you had misled them, or if the reference is awful. I suppose I would think it strange that you'd not mentioned it at some point in the recruitment process, even in a "I know the job start date is September but actually I'm available to work from April" way. They may well have a temporary position to fill anyway.
