How to teach tourism (geography) to a year 8 class many of whom have never been on holiday

I know a young demoralized trainee teacher who is struggling to teach a tourism module to a very challenging year 8 class who sound as if they are predominantly from a socioeconomic group who don't all have holidays at home or abroad.
It's in a fairly deprived area.
Are there ways round this I might pass on?

Many thanks.

When I was doing an OU course, as part of the general introduction to humanities module we looked at the seaside as part of "liminal spaces" and watched Bhaji on the Beach https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhaji_on_the_Beach. It's 30 years old now but might be a good way into looking at how different communities experience one of the traditional British ideas of tourism.

I'm not a geography teacher… but I didn’t have much in the way of holidays as a child and I can’t remember the ‘tourism’ unit making me feel I was missing out. I mostly remember doing pros and cons, impact on local community etc etc, all very factual. I remember a fairly upsetting video about the suffering of animals in tourist attractions abroad… Kids will know about holidays to some extent from TV/movies/books. Maybe get them to design a tourist attraction near their town (theme park, museum, kids’ farm, concert venue, e-sports centre, etc etc) and then assess how it would affect their local community (in positive and negative ways) - if they worked in local town planning would they approve it?

Take them on a fieldtrip to a local tourist attraction. Explore tourism in fragile environment like Antarctica or the Amazon and look at it from an environmental impacts point of view. Take them on a virtual holiday using you tube videos and Google earth....even better get them to plan a trip and present it.
