Would any exam officers be able to explain something for me in relation to gcse exams and an application for special circumstances?

Not an exam officer, but happy to try

gfedcba · 21/04/2024 07:22

The exams officer doesn't do it the SENCO does.

MrsHamlet · 21/04/2024 07:32

Access arrangements is the SENCO.
Special consideration is exams office.

gfedcba · 21/04/2024 12:03

Oh yes - thanks MrsHamlet.
The special circumstances allowance ranges form 1 to 3%,
Best thing is to email your exams officer details of the situation and they can advise how to proceed.

I was just wanting to know how quickly a decision is made and if parents are told of the decision

About special consideration? It only applies after the exams are marked.

It says up to 4 months prior to the start of the exams. What do you mean after?

That the application of SC happens after the exam is marked.

So they might award 1%, but it's 1% of the mark awarded. It's done on the basis of stats, and the examiner doesn't know it's going to happen.

So if somebody is in a situation now which is likely to affect their exam in June, school can apply for SC during the exam series, but the outcome won't be known until later.

Special consideration will normally be given by applying an allowance of additional marks to each component affected within a specification. The size of the allowance depends on the timing, nature and extent of the illness or misfortune. The maximum allowance given will be 5% of the total raw marks available in the component concerned, including coursework/non-examination assessment. The centre must be satisfied that there has been a material detrimental effect on candidate examination performance or in the production of coursework or non-examination assessment.

It must be a very difficult situation if you are looking at the 5% allowance. My best wishes to you Flowers
