Parents evening with the children

Is anyone a primary teacher and has to do parents evenings with the child sat there (from year 1 up?)

Do you talk to the child? Or to the parents? Or a bit of both?

Have they got to be sat there or is there just no provision for them to go elsewhere? If the latter and in your classroom, could you set up a colouring table for them to use whilst talking to their parents?

They are invited to come - most parents bring them. Sometimes with the whole family!

I understand your question and can see how you might be wondering how this works. You talk to them both. "Hello there, good to see you Jax. Come on in take a seat." Then, directly address the parent. "This is a chance to catch up on how things are going at school. I have been really impressed with the progress Jax has made in their English. Yes, you should be smiling Jax! He / she enjoys maths but sometimes doubts themselves. Would you agree Jax?"

It honestly just happens naturally. Some kids just sit in the book corner, some kids sit quietly, some are part of the conversation. Some parents will ask their child to be quiet at certain points. A few will bring the whole family and let them run wild, whilst you have a quick chat! Most kids just sit there quietly whilst you talk to their parent. It will just happen, I wouldn't worry too much about planning how to manage it. Just let it flow naturally, it will be fine.

Just as above.

If you need to speak to the parents separately about something, you can absolutely ask the child to step outside for a minute or go and choose a book from the book corner.
