I need a summer job and would appreciate suggestions

I am travelling to Australia with my daughter at Christmas. Although I am excited about the holiday, the trip is necessary for personal reasons. I am on a limited budget and am scrapping money together for the journey, and this is all the more difficult because I am a single parent supporting my child independently.
I am keen to make extra money by getting a job over the summer holidays and would like some suggestions on possible work I could do over this time. I would especially appreciate suggestions from those who worked over their summer break. Those in supply teaching might have ideas. I am not after a job which is necessarily well-paid; I want something realistic and practical. I live in London.

I think lots of parents would be happy to have you come and look after their children in their home as a temporary nanny, for people who rely on after-school clubs during the year summer holidays can be an expensive nightmare of patchwork childcare. Otherwise you might be able to find a job in one of the money, summer camps or schemes for children which run. Both of these probably allow you to bring your daughter with you to work.

Can you do exam marking? I'm out of the UK so don't know if you have to have taught subjects at the exam level to qualify as a marker. Nor the pay levels.

  • run a holiday club? I do that for 3 weeks in the summer.
  • Lots of nurseries need staff at the moment so register with supply agencies and say you’re happy to go to nurseries.
  • Plenty of tutoring agencies run holiday lessons, phone and ask if they need staff
  • Can you teach English? Lots of language schools have children and teens coming over for English and activity holidays. A PGCE in English, MFL or even Humanities will usurp a TEFOL qualification if you don’t have one.

I’ll come back to you if I think of any others.

What kind of teacher are you? Secondary can normally get exam marking in their subject

I am a primary teacher.

I prefer to do something that is not necessarily related to teaching. I don't mind a mindless job for a few weeks. That would probably mean less pay, but I need a break from dealing with children. My daughter does not necessarily have to accompany me, as I can make arrangements.

@Sata I tried to do a supermarket type job over Xmas but it really had a lot of paperwork for a short term thing and the pay is much worse then you'd get for a teaching related thing. I'm doing some camps- you can get £170 a day in my area for leading a day of camp. £130-145 for just turning up and having a lovely time with the kids instead of smashing them with curriculum like our day jobs 😬

Also the nurseries near us are begging us to work for them (we help ratios if QTS) which isn't such good money but upwards of £13 an hour.

The nursery sounds like a good idea. Did you get work through a supply agency?

I take In foreign students which is quite good fun and do holiday cottage cleaning.

Sata · 26/03/2024 06:26

Do you do the cottage cleaning through an agency?

Something in tourism? Look up jobs at the big attractions, tours etc.

Do you have a space you could advertise on spareroom? Some people only want something Mon-Thurs in London and then go back to their families/homes at the weekends.

A number of holiday clubs are advertising for managers on Facebook.
