Long term supply. Can I leave easily without causing a problem if a permanent job comes up? Is £181 good daily rate for long term supply?

Some of you may know, that I had a job offer rescinded due to my most recent head teachers reference. I am now working as a supply teacher. Have been offered 5 weeks in one school with daily rate of £140 and then a 1 year maternity cover supply role from April to April. I initially said until summer and may consider longer. But booking says April to April and pay is £181 daily rate- I was on m3 so I guess it’s about right?

I am thinking of looking for permanent opportunities but don’t want to leave the maternity cover post with a bad impression if I did find a new job for September.

What would everyone else do?

Schools have absolutely no hesitation in giving one days notice to long term supply teachers. Go for it.

Coming up to 10 year anniversary of Supply work. Believe me, goodwill and flexibility are very much one way streets….

Good luck , by the way

£181 is about M2/3. It is good for supply work.

One thing I would say looking at your previous posts is it might be good to do one or two long term stints to the end and ask about references...
Contradicting my earlier post, I know.

Set yourself a limit (2 years) for doing Supply otherwise you'll never get out

Why do you think I will never get out? The flexibility ?

I think (I could be wrong) that after a certain amount of time schools do not view Supply Teachers favourably. There are all sorts of reasons for being on Supply but I sometimes get feedback along the lines of "if X was any good they wouldn't be a Supply Teacher..."

Additionally Supply Pay is not as good as Permanent pay, you have to arrange most of your own CPD and you are often teaching out of subject. Teaching your specialism year after year ingrains your subject knowledge, bits of Supply not so much...
