Bee Stinger netball

New TA who has offered to coach the netball. They had no one else but I’ve not played for 20 plus years. So I’m doing my best but a bit out of my depth.

The rules are Bee Stinger so 5 aside.

From what I can ascertain, there are some specific rules for Bee Stinger and then the rest of the rules are just taken from ordinary netball.

Is that correct?

And then more specifically are they allowed to intercept the ball?

For example, ball is being passed between the opposite team. My team member can’t quite reach to catch the ball but can reach enough to knock it away (the ball is travelling, not in anyone else’s hands). When the knock it it’s either to another player in their own team or even out of play. Of course sometimes it just knocks it to an opposition player.

Is that allowed?

We had a match today and the other Umpire told me I had to stop my players from doing that.

I can see it stops the flow of play. But is it against the rules or the spirit or Bee Stinger?

The Umpire also told me my players couldn’t defend with their hands outstretched despite being 1m away. (Actually on this, is it just the feet that have to be 1m away or is it the closest part of their body? Eg So if leaning towards the opposition player even if their feet are 1m away, if their hands are only 50cm away, that’s an obstruction. Or is it just the how far the feet are away? I taught them the closest part of their body had to be 1m away.)

I want to get it right for the kids.

Sports Lead is off on long term sick leave so can’t ask them.

Thank you!

That’s great you are helping with the netball. I’m assuming Bee stinger is the newly named version of high 5 netball. It is my understanding that you can’t mark with your arms up (regardless of the 1m rule) in this form of junior game. However I haven’t heard about not being able to intercept. How else would a turn over be achieved? When I started I didn’t understand the logic of not putting your arms up, however, I can now see that it stops any advantages gained by the height discrepancies that you get at the younger ages.

Rules adaptations here which are age dependent

I'm PE lead at my school and run our netball club. My understanding of Bee Netball is that you can intercept the ball (in travel not when it is held by a player).
Unfortunately they can't mark with their arms outstretched. I'm sure I've read they can jump once with arms up to try and intercept this way. If they miss time it, then they can't jump again. If they do then it's a penalty pass.
Again I might be wrong but I've gone from the point of view that it's feet that have to be 1m away. If you watch some of the professionals, at points they almost have their hands on the ball when marking.
The rules are slightly confusing and I don't feel like everything is made clear.

Good on you for running the club though!! It's so important the kids get chances to play sports competitively.
