Anyone at an independent and send their kids to the school?

I’m applying for a couple of jobs at independent schools and would like my dc to go to them as well. I would be in the senior school and they are currently prep age. Looking for positives and negatives if anyone is happy to share. I feel like it’s a great opportunity for them but could cause issues if either they or I am unhappy at the school in future. Guess I need to consider whether it’s worth that risk.

I don't have personal experience but have seen several friends in this position. Generally speaking you won't have much to do with the younger section of the school. Once your children are old enough they can usually be timetabled away from your lessons unless it is a very small school, or you are the only teacher in a very small subject that they want to take.

In an ideal world you would work in the school for a year or so to be sure that you are settled and happy before enrolling your children. The main issue to consider is whether you would be able to afford the fees if you wanted to move on to another job and lost the staff discount.

I am in this position and it's really nice - come to school together , (there is a free bus that takes them to the prep school if they are younger) and know pretty much what they are up to - always lots to talk about as a result. There are lots of staff with kids at school. There are two potential problems I can think of though :
(i) If you kid is not well behaved it can be very awkard
(ii) If you want to leave for any reason you are kind of stuck! If the school leaves TPS , for example, you could be left in a very difficult position.

Thank you @ThanksItHasPockets and @dootball
Very true that it would be better for me to work there first, but that’s unlikely to be possible in this situation unfortunately. We certainly couldn’t afford the fees if I were to move jobs! Which kind of means I’d be stuck there… obviously I’m trying to research the places and will visit at interview stage etc. Nice to hear that there are lots of positives. I doubt my dc would misbehave to be honest, or only mildly probably!! Although you never know!

I’ve been at my school quite a long time and DD is now in Yr 5 after starting in reception. I teach in the senior school so occasionally see her around the sure but not much. I have colleagues in the same position and who have children int he same key stages they teach. It seems to work well - not really any issues.

I teach in the same school my DS is at (DD was also there). No problems for us really, though I know I have been embarrassing occasionally. I am now teaching my DS at Alevel, not planned as I was avoiding him, but he had to change year due to ill health. I just get all assessments double marked.

There are lots of positives, having the same holidays really helps.

My parent taught at the independent school I went to and I also have friends whose children are at the independent school they work at.

As the child, I'd say that it's no different from being at your parent's school whether state or independent - potentially a bit embarrassing that your school friends know all about your parent, especially if they teach your friends and your friends have opinions about your parents. If the child wants to bring friends home, that might be an issue.

As the parent, I'd say the risk is getting stuck at a school you don't like, but potentially your kids love, because of the discount on the fees. It's minimum five years per child even if they only do secondary.

If you all love it, that's fine, but not guaranteed.
