Co-regulation

Pleeeeeease can someone give me tips on how to co-regulate a child when you’re managing a class of 30? I am doing all the usual praising and rewarding positive behaviour, ignoring low level, giving choices, clear expectations from the get go etc

But I feel I need to be able to be 1:1 with a child for a while to talk and communicate feelings and meet their emotional need. But… how without another member of staff?

I feel I’m doing them a disservice.

Really hard. My best advice would be:

  • make sure your routines are as strong as possible so that other children are engaged in something when this child does need 1:1 time. If the times are predictable (eg. After every lunchtime), focus especially on those times.
  • use visuals to support the regulation process more than you use words
  • use physical prompts to support the child. Could just holding your hand, or deep pressure on the shoulder help them to regulate? Sometimes they don't need your full attention

You're not doing them a disservice, the system is.

That sounds really tough!
As a starting point though you need to work out why they're dysregulating in the first place so ABC chart for triggers, discussion with parents, other professionals, previous class or setting.
Can your school get you an OT visit for sensory needs? A lot of schools around here buy packages.

Also this is a handy little tool to help you to identify the causes then it gives you strategies for each.
