Part time teacher

Hi everyone, can someone please help me understand whether, as a part-time teacher, you are expected to run or support extracurricular school activities after regular hours as a full-time teacher, or if the allocation takes into account your part-time contracted hours?I have been asked to run a club every week just like full time staff.TIA !

Unless it is part of your directed time or you genuinely volunteer, there is no reason why you should run an after school club at all and that is the same for full or part time staff. So, do you want to volunteer to run a club or is it included in your directed time? If the answer to either is no, don't do it. If the answer is yes, then do!

I agree - I have never been asked to do this, full or part time after school, and would refuse.

Thanks for your reply. When I checked with HR, they mentioned that as a part-time teacher, I am expected to contribute to co-curricular activities for 17 weeks, as the term lasts 34 weeks. Does that mean I should be involved on a fortnightly basis?I am already doing 23 hours per week!

I've dropped a day and I aren't going to do an after school club anymore.

I've gone part time for my health and running a club adds to the stress and workload.

Seems bizarre to me as a part time teacher to expect the same commitment as a full time teacher - unless you volunteer - when are you going to have the time to do your lesson planning, assessment/marking etc?

Aavni · 10/01/2024 15:07

I agree. To be honest, on the days I'm in, I have back-to-back lessons, and the only break will be during lunch. I am considering discussing this with HR, but I'm concerned that the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) might take offense and potentially create further issues for me.

If you work at an LEA school, or at an academy that uses Burgundy Book pay and conditions conditions, then this issue is very clear.

As a part-time teacher your requirement to undertake hours 'outside' of the teaching day eg. run clubs, should be directly proportional to your part-time hours, when compared to a full time teacher. So if you work 0.6, you can be expected to work 0.6 afterschool hours, compared to full time teachers. This is regardless of how your general directed time is worked out. See paragraph 51.11 STPCD document.

Whether full or part time, in my school, clubs are voluntary but encouraged and they're proportional to hours. A full-timer's club runs for 10 weeks across a term, a 0.2 part-timer's club runs 4 sessions acros a term, e.g. You get half a day off in lieu for running a club for a term in my school (used to be a full day, now its just half)!

I really don't understand what to do. The person in charge is adamant about me supporting or running at least one club every week. Any suggestions please!

Could you support a club every other week?

They will take and take from you
I would suggest supporting a very busy club once every two weeks

Aavni · 12/01/2024 14:16

I have already offered that but it was refused!
Such a disappointment- Salary of a part timer and work expectations like a full time teacher!!

Have you spoken to your union rep?

Ask for your directed time budget. If they are insisting you run a club , it must be covered by your directed hours.
I would guess it isn't!
