Tax return

I have been doing some freelance work since June in the evenings on top of my full time teaching role (knackered!) in an effort to make some extra cash in readiness for my ds starting uni next year. Have been earning about £500 a month on top. Does anyone know how I go about filling in a tax return? I am clueless about such things.

Thanks! Is there a time limit?

Well, for the year ending April 5th 2023, you should have already registered and you have to pay the bill by the end of January.

It's probably worth getting in touch with HMRC and asking for help.

For earnings in the tax year 23-24 you will need to register for self assessment by October 2024 and submit your online tax return with payment of the tax owing by 31 January 2025. Keep all of your payslips and your P60 from your day job and records of your freelance income for the year. It would also be sensible to do a back-of-an-envelope calculation to see if an additional £6k net per annum is going to push you into the next tax bracket, as the bill may be higher than you anticipate if so.
