Violence in classrooms

I have been punched in the back of the head today by a 16YO. I have reported it to the police (who have done nothing) reported it to the academy HO. I am supply and don’t want to go back but I feel like I have lost out as I now don’t have the placement till Christmas like I did before. Has anyone else experienced similar behaviour? Is there anywhere else I should report this too?

I am so sorry that this has happened to you. Please speak to your union.

What was the school's response?

winewolfhowls · 07/12/2023 20:49

This is appalling. I hope you are okay, I would be in absolute pieces. I hope the police do something, you may have to chase them up sadly.

The police don't want to get involved in incidents they class as matters of internal school discipline.

The SLT will probably won't want to know as it means they have to do something decisive. Some SLTs talk'-the-talk on being decisive but don't walk-the-walk. This would mean upsetting the child (thug) who punched you and child might not want that so it won't happen

As of now, they haven’t responded at all. I have contacted my agency and they are very sorry but I have now lost a days pay for tomorrow.

The police haven’t contacted me but have advised school (heard through a third party) that they wouldn’t be speaking to the child about the incident. I have complained about the service. I called 999 as the child had punched me and was threatening to kill me and they wouldn’t send out an officer.

You need to be speaking to your union first and foremost. I am assuming you are in one. Secondly, you have been assaulted. Ring the police station involved, or ring 101 and tell them you would like to exercise your right to press charges and that you will be going to the press and your doctor. I would go to your doctor and get checked over and seek their advice too. Contact the headteacher directly as well, and tell them you expect to hear about what course of action will be taken, that you will be pressing charges, you have been to your doctor as you have been injured (worry the life out of them, tell the school you're injured) and threaten them with the press.

How long have you been there? If you have been there for 12 weeks or longer, you are entitled to be treated as if you are a permanent member of staff. Sick pay is a possibility for example even though you are supply.

You have been assaulted, do not let them fob you off. Threaten them with everything and mean business. They are trying their luck, hoping you will back off. But as I say, get immediate union advice

I have chased the police today and made a complaint to the police as I wasn’t sent assistance for an assault at the time it was happening despite it being a 999 call. I have been told it had been allocated a crime number and someone will be in touch in due course. I asked how long and they couldn’t say.

i feel like I should be doing more to make sure this behaviour isn’t tolerated and the police take it more seriously. Not sure how I would go about it…

Find a copy of the school's procedures. What should happen when a teacher is assaulted? Did they follow these procedures? Did the student have a history of violence? Were you made aware? Was there a risk assessment if he has a history of violent behaviour? Get your evidence together.

Newrumpus · 12/12/2023 18:48

That is appalling. I wonder if social media or traditional media will encourage a more helpful response.
