I currently teach 3 days a week. When youngest goes to school next year dh wants me to work/earn the other 2 days which seems fair. But there is no way i want to teach full time and im not sure what to do the other 2 days (id have to do school drop off and pick up). Worked in marketing writing marketing materials/ editing/speechwriting before teaching for non profit sector but not done that for 12 years. Sounds silly but im already panicking a bit because i am adamant im not being a full time teacher again - i feel i can cope well at the minute because i have 4 days not in school!

Do you want to work the other two days or is it pressure from your husband?
Is it for financial reasons you are being asked to become full time?

CeciliaMars · 08/11/2023 17:31

Tell your husband to be careful what he wishes for! If you work 5 days a week, either you will have to spend all weekend cleaning/washing/shopping/ironing etc or he will have to do half of it in his evenings. If you get a cleaner/ironer/have to pay for more wraparound care, will you be much better off financially? I wouldn't be. And the whole family would be more miserable and stressed. Do your figures before you decide anything!

So your DH wants you to work the two days, but still do drop off and pick up? Tell him he'll have to do some of those school runs if you're both working full time, he might change his tune. Anything that you do is unlikely to earn the same money as teaching, so how about you compromise with 4 days teaching, and you do three days of drop offs and pick ups, and he does two?

Thanks for replies. He already does the drop off 3 days a week and pick up one of those days (grandparents do the other 2). Reason for extra days is financial so we could afford to pay off more mortgage, save for holidays etc. We wouldnt get a cleaner etc as we split most jobs like that anyway - im focused mainly on childcare on those days and we split most house jobs. So it's not fair for me to have 2 days not working when he does!

Supply?
Tutoring for home ed. Are you primary or secondary?
Forest school

Helpaladyoutplease · 14/11/2023 06:50

@BorisIsACuntWaffle i was thinking home ed tutoring a possibility (im primary so not sure how much demand from home ed parents at that age...).
With supply my issue would be i could only do half nine ish to 2:30 because of pick ups. The cost of before and after school care would not make that day's earnings worth it i think...

I work at a private school in the mornings providing support for a boy with learning needs. The hourly pay is pretty good. You could look into that if you have any local private schools?

Helpaladyoutplease · 14/11/2023 17:24

@CeciliaMars that's a great idea to look into! Plenty of private schools near me...

Would you consider being a TA and MDS at the school the other two days? My niece does a mixture of this and teaching and means she doesn't have to worry about childcare.

Helpaladyoutplease · 15/11/2023 19:55

@ifonly4 i could be a groups teacher i think potentially on those days but know if it was at my current school id be called on to cover classes all over the place for not enough money!

Online tutoring for overseas students, apparently native English speakers are always in demand.

Helpaladyoutplease · 18/11/2023 13:39

Thankyou, great idea
