I'm waiting to find out the ITT Bursaries for 2024/25 post graduate teacher training (for secondary English).Does anyone have any best guesses/expectations as to whether this will go up/come down/disappear??? I'm applying when the portal opens on 10 October !

Thank you 😎

I don’t think anyone would predict anything that might happen with teacher training and recruitment at the moment! Wishing you the best of luck anyway.

I’m surprised to see bursaries for English, I don’t think it’s ever been a shortage subject in the past.

I know! There was a £12000 bursary pre covid.I had to delay applying, and when I CAME TO IT, WAS UNABLE TO AS THERE WAS NO BURSARY (LOTS OF PEOPLE DECIDED THEY WANTED TO BE TEACHERS, BUT LOADS HAVE LEFT, AND VOILA, ITS NOW A SHORTAGE SUBJECT. aS ARE CLASSICS, SCIENCES, MATHS ETC ETC)

When I qualified back in 2002 English was a shortage subject and qualified for the repayment of teachers' loans scheme.
Of course, in reality now most secondary subjects are shortage subjects

I'd assume bursaries will go up this year, but you really can't know until they're announced. There was a suggestion that teachers could get £30,000 in their first 5 years after qualifying- this might lead to a reduction in ITT bursaries (e.g. when they trialled similar for maths, the initial bursary went down).

If you need the bursary in order to train, just wait for information to come out. There's really no need to apply when the portal opens.

Worth bearing in mind that as English is two GCSES which the majority of students will take, it's often one of the largest departments in most schools- so even if there are more total English teachers, it doesn't mean it fills the needs of all schools. English can also have lots of A-levels (Language, Lit, Media, Film etc) within their department.

More subjects now attract a bursary, looks like English is now £10000

Be careful and don't trust anything they (the govt) say. When I applied for PGCE English in 2021, there was a £12000 bursary. Once I had already quit my previous job and accepted a place on the course, govt withdrew it, so I had to fund it myself. I'd advice not relying on any bursary that is promised.

Yes english is £10K
