Question for primary SLT or HR!

Would you consider hiring a reception teacher who had EYTS, rather than QTS? I have the opportunity to do work based EYTT next year, but am fairly certain I would like to work in a reception class rather than a nursery. There are a couple of places locally who do offer the early primary (3-7) teacher training, so it is an option, but logistically and financially the EYTT programme would be much easier for me.

I understand there’s no guarantee of a job regardless of what qualification I have, but my worry is that the preference will be for QTS and I might struggle to even get interviews. It would be really helpful to hear from any primary heads/deputy heads etc who can tell me what they actually think of EYTS!

I am aware that I would only be able to teach in academies or independent schools with EYTS, but that is most of the schools in my area so that doesn’t bother me too much 🙂

I'd say the disadvantage to a school would be that they could not move you around in future to work with other key stages.

The advantage would be (I think) that they could pay you less as you wouldn't have to be paid as a qualified teacher.

Yes, that’s what is worrying me really. If I did the 3-7 training then it obviously wouldn’t be ideal to move me to KS2, but they could do if they wanted as I would have QTS.

I wouldn’t take a teaching job without being paid a teacher salary, so that could be another issue! If I am qualified to teach an age group then I would expect to be paid a teacher’s salary to teach that age group, but sadly I imagine you’re probably right.

Honestly I would do the course to get QTS! EYTS should be exactly the same but the reality is it isn’t. Do the 3-7 specialism and generally you’ll end up in that range to begin with in schools but be so much more employable.

Thank you for the advice! It’s a shame it’s not looking like the best option at the moment.

I'd consider what is going to be better long term, and I suspect with QTS your earning potential would be greater.
