Sickness again

I recently started working as a supply TA for an agency. I have had a long term placement with the same school since I started in May, but school germs are killing me! Was off for a week last term with horrible cough/sinus. Been back a week and a half and have got the same thing again despite first defence nasal spray. I feel terrible as the school is so short staffed. I love the work, but I am on my 3rd illness since I started. It's not just mild sniffles, either. I have had more sickness in the last 4 months than I have had in the last 10 years. Has anyone got any tips for surviving the germs in a school environment?

Yes, l have been trying to boost it, but am generally a healthy, fit person, so don't quite understand why I am struggling so much. We moved back to the mainland from living on a very small island, so sort of understand more people, different germs, etc, but it's been over a year since we moved. Should have adjusted by now, I would have thought.

Not that l am aware of, but I have only been there since May. I work in early years, which does tend to be more germy.

I am pretty fit and active (non-driver so walk everywhere, both out of necessity and enjoyment). Not overweight, though have a bit more middle than l used to. Reasonable intake of fruit and veg, heavier on the salad veg over the summer months. Could definitely eat more F & V,

My first year as a TA I had a constant cough and cold from October - April. Did my PGCE the following year and was then in the classroom for 15 years with minimal illness. I reckon it's just that your body is encountering lots of new viruses - once you're immune to them, you won't look back.

@toomuchicecream I do hope that's it. I just need not to lose the job before I get to that stage.

Are you going in even if you're not quite 100%? In 20 years I've never had more than 2 days off on the trot for illness. I'm lucky to be generally healthy and know lots of people have conditions that necessitate a certain amount of time off, but have certainly also had days where I've gone in feeling a bit ropey.

Utterbunkum · 18/09/2023 22:45

@Moonsoup yes, I have been, but was forced to have 4 days off last term when I couldn't get out of bed. To be fair, that might have been COVID.

@Giveituphq for some reason your responses, which seemed reasonable to me, have been deleted. I am new to this site and do not know how it works here. I wasn't offended by any of your posts and did not request that they be removed. To answer your query which I did see before it was removed, I am off with this one, but will go back tomorrow. I took the time be ause I didn't last time and ended up needing more time off, so I am properly clearing what has been a much shorter episode of dizzying sinus trouble. It's the sinus issue which incapacitates me, it makes it hard to stand up.
