Nappy changes at school

So I have a question just because nothing like this has happened before in my 20 years of teaching. Our 2 year 1 classes have no TA twice a week (more if our TA is absent). On those occasions, we have to stop teaching, put both classes together so that myself or the other teacher can do the changes. There are TA's in other year groups who could be pulled just for 10 mins to do the changes, which would then have no impact on the 2 classes as it does now, but we have been told we can't borrow any TAs and need to do it ourselves. Does this happen in anyone elses school? I don't mind doing it and would never not change a child, it just seems strange that we are being expected to stop lessons and join together to release a teacher.

That sounds completely unmanageable. If you have children still in nappies in Year 1, I would have thought they need more adult support than 1 teacher for 30 children can provide. Definitely keep bringing this to SLT.

This definitely needs sorting. As a parent, I'd be horrified to find out that lessons were being disrupted to this extent to support the needs of one child. Pulling a TA out of another class really does seem like the lesser of two evils. How often is this happening?

A child with continence issues requiring nappies in year 1 should have an echp specifying appropriate adult support to change etc.

Thanks all for you replies. They had a health care plan drawn up by the SENCO last year - they managed to do it themselves apparently. However after several complaints from me over the last 2 days, they have finally agreed to allow a TA who is not assigned to a class to come in to sort it - which should have happened in the first place really. Thanks again.

That's a job for a welfare assistant surely? As a TA, I'd be horrified to be expected to do happy changes.

A real waste of a TA, unless it's specified in their contract to undertake such a task?
