Peopled out by the end of the day?!

Anyone else?

I am secondary and a core HoD, with a form group as well. I do enjoy my job, I honestly do.

But omg by the end of some days, I am totally peopled out! Obviously all day of kids plus other adults/parent queries.

By the time I get home, I struggle to hold a conversation properly 😂

I'm not a teacher but I work in a secondary school and I am so tired already 😩. There's just so much work and already so many behaviour issues. A Y9 threw something at me yesterday just because he was cross (not with me) and I happened to make eye contact. There's a dad who is just a big ball of rage who has been to the school three times since yesterday morning.

It's a lot. I'm burnt out already and I'm not the only one. I also love my job and I'm hopeful things are going to calm down a bit soon, but this week has been rough.

Sorry, that wasn't entirely what you asked was it? I'm not peopled out necessarily but I donhave no energy when I get home and want as little chat as possible

Core HOD with a form group? WTF.

DH knows not to try to engage me in conversation or to get me to make decisions when I've just got in.

PumpkinPie2016 · 13/09/2023 20:18

@NoTVAndNoBeerMakeHomerSomethingSomething gosh that sounds tough! I hope next week is better.

@noblegiraffe WTF indeed! In my previous school, as a HoD, I didn't have a tutor group. My form are nice kids but a lot of need for various reasons. Plus, it's quite a big role in our school so a lot of work. I only get 2 additional free periods a week for the HoD role so, I am a little stretched 😂

2 frees for HOD of a core subject? That's bonkers. Is it a tiny school or something?

PumpkinPie2016 · 13/09/2023 20:59

We are currently relatively small as we were newly opened last year, but we are in a trust with other full sized secondaries and this is the trust wide allocation. So every core HoD has 2 frees on top of the normal PPA.

We have a 50 period fortnight. Full time, no TLR teachers get 5 PPA a fortnight. I get 9. Roughly equal so 5 frees one week, 4 the next. 1 of those is taken up with my line management meeting.

On top of that, there is extra curricular sessions (we have to offer something- part of directed time).

Then the form group and associated work e.g. delivering careers/PHSE etc. Phone calls to follow up on absences/lateness etc.

At my previous school, I had no form, no extra curricular and 10/25 free periods a week. So it's been a shock to the system 😂

My HOD, also core subject in a big school, has a form and also gets 2 extra frees per week. We get 4 PPAs per 50 lesson fortnight (and 3 frees, though these can be used for cover). Your setup sounds quite normal. I'm "just" a class teacher and I'm knackered and absolutely get the peopled out (Year 7 form so lots to do on top of everything else). I'm not sure how my HOD is standing.

noblegiraffe · 15/09/2023 00:10

I just looked up my HOD and they get 10 frees a week and no form. How on earth are you expected to do your job?

madnessitellyou · 15/09/2023 18:27

I know what you mean. Dh is always asking me what's wrong of an evening. I'm too done with talking and being 'on it' to talk more!

I'm a y7 form tutor and I'm usually peopled out by the end of form time tbh. Especially at this time of year...

Whattodo121 · 15/09/2023 19:15

I’ve just started at a new school, and it’s bonkers. It’s much tougher than my previous one, and although I’m happy with the choice I made to leave, I am missing knowing my way around and knowing who to ask to get shit done 🤣 My son has started year 7 (at a different school) so emotions and exhaustion are running high. I literally cannot talk to anyone after work, I am totally talked out.

PumpkinPie2016 · 16/09/2023 09:41

@noblegiraffe that's what I used to have. I just end up doing quite a lot outside of school time. I try to be as efficient as possible in my frees. I get in early as well so do some stuff then. Sometimes, I get a quick job done at lunch too.

I obviously want to spend time visiting lessons as well so sometimes other jobs are put on hold to do that.

On busier teaching days, I feel I don't do much curriculum leadership stuff. E.g. on Monday, I will have my form, then PPA P1 but then I teach P2-5 and have my STEM club after school.

I have made sure that my department systems are very efficient so that my team know exactly what they are doing. All key resources I print centrally so no daily printing.

It's hard at times but when I see it coming together, it's brilliant 🙂

Glad it's not just me who is peopled out by the end of a day 😂 @madnessitellyou completely get it about Y7! I absolutely love teaching Y7 - I love their enthusiasm, but my goodness it takes some energy!
@Whattodo121 starting somewhere new is doubly exhausting! Whenever I have changed schools, I always felt it took me a full term to find my feet!

I am usually 'staffed' out before the day has begun!

GrammarTeacher · 18/09/2023 12:14

@PumpkinPie2016 if it helps I have half an hour a week extra as HoD and have a 6th form tutor group (so UCAS reports) too. I'm drowning and peopled out had son's birthday party At weekend too. Urgh.

PumpkinPie2016 · 18/09/2023 17:36

@GrammarTeacher half an hour is just ridiculous 😳

No wonder you're drowning!

My weekend was busy too with one thing and another 🙄
