Contract terms in schools - illness

Is it standard practice for schools and colleges to only pay SSP when a teacher is off sick? That means no pay at all for the first three days. Seems a bit tight given how much work and effort we put in.

Not in my school

Not normal but I know someone who works in an academy that only pays SSP. Unusual but not unheard of.

I think that if they adhere to Burgundy Book, this isn't correct. However, if the person has very little continuous service, they may not have entitlement to occupational sick pay.

If they are pulling that shit I hope you are setting absolutely no cover at all!

National conditions are outlined here, but obviously unfortunately academies do not have to follow this.

Rather bizarrely, it seems like the "first year of service" doesn't start until the April after you are appointed, so if they are in a new job, this may be the reason they are not getting sick pay.

I agree that if I was receiving no pay, I wouldn't be setting cover!
