Hi. Starting a new job as a therapist in a private secondary school. What do I wear? Some of my time will be spent painting and on the floor playing in sand with kids, other times I’ll be talking to students, I’ll also be attending meetings around the school and with parents. I want something comfy but practical and reasonably smart ish.. any help wouid be most appreciated. Have worked in a state primary before but the staff were v casual and often quite scruffy. I think the expectation will be different.

also day 1 is inset. Do I wear the same? Thanks x

Stick to smart casual to start with. I wear midi dresses with a cardigan or black trousers with a blouse. For the inset day they are usually pretty casual.

That’s really helpful thank you. Would you be brave enough to wear ‘smart’ trainers? Like you say, I might see what others are doing first?

Rieker loafers (are similar) or remonte ankle boots can be comfortable enough if you need to wear shoes.Seasalt, White Stuff and fatface have sales at at the moment. There clothes can be layered eg with leggings.Having a smart Summer and Winter cardigan/jumper/top to grab for when you want to seem more formal or alternatively a more jolly one for the sand can also help with flexibility.

Check for a dress code. Where I work some mentioned items are not allowed eg trainers, leggings

I've just moved from secondary to primary and was surprised that everyone wears trainers...even the Head. They all dress quite smartly, but wear trainers. In all the secondary schools I've worked that wouldn't be allowed.

Shoes have gone more casual since Covid. I don't generally wear trainers at school (I like Hotter flats) but I could if I wanted.
